3 Things You Should Do Before Removalists Arrive

Moving house can be very stressful. Not only do you need to pack all of your belongings, but you also need to load them onto a van and transport them to your new home. Thankfully, by hiring a team of removalists, you can take the stress out of your move. However, while removalists are trained professionals, you can make their life easier by following the advice below.

Let the removalists know about local parking

A team of removalists will typically use a large truck to transport your belongings and furniture from one place to another. The size of the trucks used will often mean that they will have difficulty finding a parking spot. Ideally, you want the truck parked close to your home, as it is not practical to expect the removalists to carry heavy furniture for many miles to the nearest parking place. If parking restrictions are in place, you should apply to the local council for a parking permit that will allow the truck to park in restricted parking places for the day. If this is not possible, you should consider asking a neighbour if you can use their driveway.

Make a checklist of your belongings and furniture

Before the removalists arrive at your property, you should take the time to make a checklist of all your belongings. Start by listing every piece of furniture in your home and the room it is located in. This will help the removalists to plan how they will load these items onto the truck and in what order they should remove the items from your home. For example, furniture that contains glass or mirrored panels will typically be loaded last so the weight of other items does not cause the fragile surface to crack or shatter. Once you have listed all of the furniture, you should move on to any boxes of belongings. It is a good idea to number each box. You can then write the number on the checklist along with a brief description what is in each container.

Provide a floor plan of your home

Along with the checklist, you should also provide a floor plan of your home. Floor plans are particularly useful in larger properties, as they will allow the removalists to easily navigate around the different rooms. A floor plan will also allow the removalists to assess the size of doorways, corridors and stairways and will ensure they do not try to move large pieces of furniture through spaces that are too narrow.
